I’m a resilient, youngish newsroom “veteran” who still believes in, and wants to help produce, good journalism. Staying flexible and adapting to what a newsroom and/or publication needs has helped keep me in the biz for more than a decade.

Experience:

Detroit News                      Sept. 2012 – Current
Lead sports designer who dabbles in copy editing and occasional bylines, too.
Started as a temp and got invited back two times before they put a ring on it.

The Weekly Noun                May 2014 – April 2015
I created this now-defunct website to report relevant feature stories after a job layoff. I designed and maintained the site, found and reported stories while paying fair wages to out-of-work/freelance friends for copy editing.

Dearborn Press & Guide     Jan. 2006 – Dec. 2013
Duties expanded from an internship to freelancer to staffer responsible for copy editing, design, reporting, and working the website. Still freelance write here with the News’ OK.

Downriver News-Herald    Sept. 2010 – Dec. 2013
After combining offices with the Press & Guide, my skills were used for both newspapers and related websites.

Belleville Lake Current     Sept. 2012 – April 2013
Got hired by this weekly startup to oversee editing, production flow and writer training while performing weekly editing and copy editing duties

Oakland Press                    Dec. 2007 – Sept. 2009
Did copy editing and page designing for the business and sports desks, maintained community calendars, puzzles pages and performed budget duties during my editor’s absences

Education:

U of M Dearborn – Master of Arts in Liberal Studies

U of M Dearborn – Bachelor’s degree in communications and print journalism
